Winifred A. “Winnie” Smith, age 83 of Navarre, formerly of Massillon, passed away on Thursday, April 1, 2010 at Aultman Hospital. She was born on December 7, 1926 in Massillon and was the daughter of the late Fred H. and Julia (Crookston) Keen. She was an area resident for most of her life, and lived in Colorado Springs, CO for 12 years. She graduated from Washington High School in 1944. She worked at Engleharts Music Store and Sutter’s Jewelry Store before moving to Colorado. When she returned, she worked several places before she began her career at the Independent. She later worked in the library at Jackson High School. She enjoyed playing bridge and was a long time member of the Tanet’s Card Club. Winnie volunteered with the American Red Cross blood drives. She also enjoyed playing the piano. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Allen Keen and her sister, Julia Linhart. She is survived by her husband, Richard A. Smith, whom she married on November 8, 1963, her children, Marguerite McCullough of Marion, SC, Joan (Ray) Braucher of Massillon, James (Yolanda) McCullough of Riverside, CA, Michael (Lucy) McCullough of Ridgeway, CO, Stephanie (Sonny) Thompson of Falmouth, VA, Kelly (Rick) Craddock of Westerville, OH, Sandy (Elmer) Volkert of Massillon and Rick (Kristin) Smith of Navarre. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren, 11great grandchildren and her brother Fred “Fritz” (Gloria) Keen of Cape Coral, FL. A service to celebrate the life of Winnie Smith will take place on Monday at 11:00 A.M. at Christ Lutheran Church 3545 Amherst Road NW, Massillon with Rev. Nancy Bacon officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Hills Burial Park. The family will receive friends at the Arnold-Lynch Funeral Home on Sunday from 5-8 P.M. and on Monday at the church one hour before the service.
