William “Bill” H. Matthews, age 87 of Massillon passed away on September 16, 2018. He was born on August 27, 1931 to the late Hubert and Irene (Cooper) Matthews. He married Kathryn M. Sommers in ovember 1956 and they shared 54 years together until her passing in 2010. Bill proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He worked as a Printer for the Coshocton Tribune and the Massillon Independent for many years until his retirement. He was a parishioner at St. Joseph Catholic Church for many years serving in the Choir and served in the Soup Kitchen “The Mashed Potato Man”. Bill served as Post Commander and Chaplain for the Massillon American Legion Post 221, was a member of the Mohican Chapter of the Penn-Ohio Model A Club and was also an avid coin collector. He will forever be remembered as a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. Bill is survived by his children James (Holly) Matthews and Joan (Rod) Boester; his daughter-in-law Melanie Kilgore; his grandchildren Mallory Matthews, Jamie Boester Hall, Jeanne (Allen) Lawrence, Alex (Stephanie) Boester, Amie Boester, Kathryn Boester, Emily Matthews, Erica Matthews; his great grandchildren Izaak Matthews, Parker and Connor Lawrence, Addison and Kinsley Boester and Grace Hall; his cousin Leroy Cooper, as well as a host of family and friends. In addition to his parents and wife, Bill was preceded in death by his son David Matthews and his faithful canine companion Abby. A Celebration of Bill’s life will be held at the Paquelet Funeral Home at 11 A.M. on Saturday, September 22, 2018. The family will receive friends on Friday, September 21, 2018 from 5-8P.M. and 1 hour prior to the service.
