William A. Caples, age 76 of Massillon passed away Wednesday October 28, 2009 at Affinity Medical Center. Bill was born January 31, 1933 in Gnadenhutten, Ohio to the late Harold & Belva (Gardner) Caples and was a life resident of Massillon. Bill was a 1950 graduate of Washington School where he participated in both basketball and band. He then graduated from Mount Union College in 1960 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. Bill served in the US Army in Korea and received an Honorable Discharge. He taught for more than three decades in the Perry School System as an eighth grade teacher at Edison Jr. High and served as a school board member for Massillon City Schools. Bill’s voice has been heard as the broadcaster of Massillon Tiger Football and other Tiger sports for over 35 years. This Washington High School graduate is a community leader, a loyal booster and an active supporter of the Massillon City Schools. He served as President of the Massillon Tiger Basketball Benchwarmers and Chairman of the Massillon Tiger Sideliners. Bill also was an active member of the Massillon Tiger Football Booster Club, Orangemen, and the Touchdown Club. Bill’s warm and enthusiastic style has allowed countless numbers of sports fans to share in the unique experience that is Massillon Tiger Football. In recognition of his many years as the “Voice of the Tigers”, the broadcast booth in the West Press Box was dedicated as the “Bill Caples Broadcast Booth” In addition to his parents a brother, Ralph Caples preceded him in death. He is survived by a brother Robert E. Caples of Massillon, two nieces, Pam Porrini, Susan (Thomas) Parker and a nephew Steve Caples, several great nephews, great nieces, and loyal friends. Monday November 2, 2009 at 1:00 pm there will be a Celebration and Sharing of Bill’s Life at Paquelet Funeral Home, Fr. Edward Gretchko, the team chaplain will officiate. Mr. Caples final resting place will be Rose Hill Memorial Garden. Memorials in Bill’s name can be made Benchwarmers Booster Club, Massillon Tiger Football Booster Club, Washington High School Alumni Association, or a Washington Scholarship.
