Veryl “Ed” Turskey of Massillon passed away at home surrounded by family at the age of 81 on Monday, November 27, 2017 after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born on December 21, 1935 in Massillon, Ohio. Veryl’s life revolved around being with his family. He especially loved the family fishing trips to Southview Cottages at Rice Lake, Canada. He did this annual trip for 45 years creating lasting memories across five Turskey generations. He married the love of his life, Ruth Ann (Laps) Turskey on September 23, 1955. They have three children, Scott (Chris), Steve (Sue), and Shawn (Stacey). He has nine grandkids: Rachel (Ernie) Burbrink, Sara (Chris) Nycz, Daniel (Brianna) Turskey, Ashley (Ryan) Linsalata, Lindsay (Vinny) Latessa, Craig, Jacob, Samantha, and Joshua; and eight great-grandkids (Hadley, Luke and Baby girl Burbrink; Nolan and Gibson Nycz; Finnegan Turskey, Amelia Linsalata, and Domenic Latessa. He has a brother Darwin “Turk” (Norma) Turskey and sister Karen (Myron) Croskey. He was preceded in death by his father and mother George and Mary (Hollinger) Turskey, and his sister Janice Pomponi. Veryl had an incredible amount of positive influence on those around him, spending a majority of his time serving, mentoring, and helping others. Affectionately known by many as “Grandpa” he enjoyed working with the younger generation, teaching kids how to fish, build projects in the woodshop, and various outdoor sports. Whoever he worked with, he made them feel special with the goal of developing a life-long friendship. He was a self-taught computer expert and became technically proficient. He had one of the first home computers in the early 1970s. He continually helped family and friends with their computers for the remainder of his life. For the greater-Massillon community, he served in several areas. He was on the board of Camp Echoing Hills serving the physically challenged. He co-launched Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Western Stark County. He was Massillon’s 6th Ward Councilman. He was the commissioner of Bantam and Little League for multiple years. He joined Grace United Church of Christ in 1956, serving in many roles for over 61 years. He helped design and build one of the first message centers in Ohio at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium. He ran the message center from the press box during football games for 21 years. He started as an electrical technician in 1954 at Goodyear Aerospace, working his way up to a senior manufacturing engineer on projects like the blimp, flight simulators, and weapon systems. He retired from Goodyear Aerospace (Loral/Lockheed Martin) after 43 years of service. In 2002, he joined the North Lawrence Fish and Game club, serving on many board functions and strengthening their youth programs. A Celebration of his life will be held at Grace United Church of Christ in Massillon on Tuesday, December 26, 2017 at 2:00 P.M.
