Vernon A. Smith, 92, of Massillon, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on April 23, 2024.

He was born in Struthers, Ohio on March 28,1932. Vernon cherished the simple joys of life. He was an avid golfer, often found on the greens perfecting his swing or enjoying a round with his friends. He had a deep love of watching classic western movies and the sitcom “Two and Half Men”. Vernon had a zest for adventure, whether boating, waterskiing, or traveling alongside his late wife of 64 years, Jody.

His love of sports extended beyond leisure activities. He was a dedicated fan of the Guardians, Browns, Ohio State, and the Cavaliers, often seen enthusiastically cheering for his favorite teams. He especially took delight in watching his grandchildren play sports, their success bringing him immense pride.

He served as a deacon at Treasure Coast Christian Church, and as treasurer of Austintown Community Church, embodying his commitment to his Christian values. Vern served just shy of nine years in The Ohio National Guard, 929th Engineering Battalion.

Vernon had a successful career at Standard Printing, where he worked as a prep foreman and mentor for over 26 years. He was known for his handy skills, always ready to fix things around the house or tinker with cars. He had a soft spot for convertibles and boats. He enjoyed cruising with the wind in his hair.

Dancing brought Vernon and Jody closer together over the years, showcasing their enduring love and connection. Family was paramount to Vernon, he adored his two daughters, providing them with unwavering support and love.

Animals held a special place in Vernon’s heart, especially his dogs- Ginger, Betsy, Whiskers, Misty, Scruffy, Tiki, Coco, and Lizzy. His 21 years as a snowbird in Florida allowed him to embrace warmer climates and cultivate new friendships. Vernon’s legacy lives on through the memory shared by those who knew and loved him. He will be deeply missed by his daughters Kim (Mike) Kuhns and Lori (Larry) Case; grandchildren Corey (Marla) Kuhns, Katie (Sean) Clark, Beth (Steve) Barney, Kyle Welch, Matt (Tara) Welch and Trisha Barnett; and seven great-grandchildren.
