Velma May Pelger

Our gracious and loving mother, Velma May Pelger passed away peacefully surrounded by family members on November 24, 2012 after a brief illness. Mom was born on May 23, 1921 to Albert and Iva (Blackmer) Gantz. She graduated from McKinley High School in 1940 and she often worked at her father's restaurants as a waitress and cashier. Velma married Andrew Pelger on September 9, 1941. As a homemaker, she enjoyed keeping a spotless home, cooking, baking, playing cards, making Christmas tree shadow boxes from antique jewelry, and entertaining her children, grandchildren, and most recently her great granddaughter. Proceeded in death by her loving husband, Andrew; parents; five sisters: Marie, Mildred, Corma, Hazel, and Wilma. She is survived by her daughter, Melinda (Mark) Changet, son, Gary (Nancy) Pelger, three grandchildren, Monica Changet, Amanda Changet, Jennifer (Ryan) Pelger-Jennings, and one great granddaughter, Lillian Jennings. She is also survived by her very close brother, Charles Gantz. Mom will be sadly missed by those who knew and loved her and especially by her son and daughter and their families. Our holidays will never be the same without Mom to share them with. Her Russian tea cakes were covered with powdered sugar as well as the family's faces. According to her wishes, cremation has already taken place and a memorial service will be held on Wednesday, November 28, 2012 at 11:30 a.m. by the Rev. Ben Lee officiating at The New Beginning Church on Portage Street in North Canton where she was a faithful member for many years. Friends may gather at the church on Wednesday from 11-11:30 a.m. Memorial donations may be made in Velma's name to The New Beginning Church of the Nazarene, 5640 Portage Street NW, North Canton, Ohio 44720.
