Stanley Gene Surmay

October 5, 1938 — September 21, 2021

Stanley Gene Surmay, 82, of Canton passed away peacefully on September 21, 2021. After many years of jokingly checking the obituaries for himself, he would sure get a chuckle out of finding his here today. Stan was born October 5th, 1938. His life was filled with family, hard work, and sports. He had an unbeatable work ethic and spent many decades as a skilled mason for Gaetano Construction. He took great pride in his craftsmanship, induction into the Stark County Amateur Fumble Ball Hall of Fame, and above all cheering on his grandkids at their sporting events. He enjoyed working outdoors, snowmobiling, gardening, swimming in his pool and spending time with family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul & Anna Surmay, siblings Paul, Johnny, Danny, late wife, Marsha, grandson, Cole Surmay, and granddaughter, Katie Nesbitt Cooney. He leaves behind children Stanley (Jayne) Surmay, Sheri (Merle) Weber, Steve (Stacie) Surmay, and Shelly (Tom) Nesbitt, grandchildren, Shannon (Chris) Smith, Stanley (Colleen) Surmay, Miranda Weber, Madison (Joe) Hammel, Mackenzie Weber, Korey (Melissa) Nesbitt, Kyle Nesbitt, Karlee Nesbitt, Sophia Surmay, great-grandchildren, Talan, Bode, and Cruz Smith, and siblings Shirley Dawson, Ronnie Surmay, Ginny Prinzo, Millie (Glen) Smail, and Susie McCleary. Though time began to fade Stan’s memory he held three convictions to be true. Kids these days don’t work like they used to, it’s hard to beat McDonald’s coffee, and he had indeed been very blessed. Services will be held at Saint Clement’s Church in Navarre, where Stan was a lifelong member. Calling hours will begin at 10am with a funeral mass immediately following at 11am. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be directed to the Cole Surmay Scholarship fund through Pegasus Farm, 7490 Edison St. NE, Hartville, Ohio 44632.
