SPC Zachary A. Grass age 22 of Sugar Creek Twp. was killed died Saturday June 16, 2007 by a roadside bomb while on duty in Iraq. He was a member of Charlie Battery, 2-12 Field Artillery. In February 2005 he enlisted in the Army and went to basic training at Fort Sill, OK and then was assigned to Ft. Lewis, WA. He was ordered to Iraq April 11, 2007. Zach is the son of Frank & Patti (Steiner) Grass of Sugar Creek Twp. He was born May 22, 1985 in Canton and was raised on Crestline St. until entering the military. He was a 2003 graduate Fairless High School where he played on the basketball team that finished third in Division III and the baseball team as both pitcher and 3rd baseman. He was a typical kid who loved to ride 4 wheelers, play golf, play video games and hang out with his buddies. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Elizabeth (Payer) Steiner-Register and Joseph Steiner, his paternal grandfather, William H. Grass and two uncles, Joseph & Edward Steiner. He is survived by his parents, Frank & Patti Grass, bother Benjamin Grass, grandmother Daphna Grass of Harmon, uncles and aunts: Tammy (George) England, Janice Steiner, Greg (Joyce) Steiner, John (Kathy) Steiner, Theresa (James) Carpenter, Michael Steiner, Timothy (Ronnie) Steiner, Thomas Steiner, William (Gloria) Grass, David Grass, Kenneth Grass, Robert Grass and Brenda Grass, and many, many cousins. He will be sadly missed by his family and his St. Bernard, ‘Brutus’. Funeral service will be 1 PM Monday June 25, 2007 at Fairless High School. Interment will be at Welty Cemetery. Friends may call Sunday from 2 – 8 PM at the Paquelet Funeral Home in Massillon and one hour prior to the service at the school on Monday.
