Ms. Shirley L. “Cookie” Richards, daughter of the late William Mays & Bessie Louise Kirkwood Mays was born March 31st, 1945 in Brookville, Pennsylvania. She was a 1963 graduate of Brookville High School and went onto take classes at Clarion State University, Clarion, PA. She worked at Burly Bear Glove Factory in Brookville until 1964. Shirley moved to Ohio in the 1960s, where she raised her family.
She peacefully departed this life Mother's Day: Sunday May 14th, 2023 at Country Lawn Nursing Home in Navarre, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her sister, Rebecca “Becky” Mays-Kunselman, Son-in-law, David A. Klotz, & niece, Victoria “Vicki” Rhodes-Rudolph
Shirley was well known in the Massillon & Navarre community from her many years of working at the "Italian/American Club" & Smiley's Ristorante, Amstutz, & Luminko’s. She worked well into her 70's, serving customers their favorite dishes. As a result of her generous spirit and pleasant personality, she was loved by many.
She enjoyed gardening, painting, reading, time with friends & traveling back "home" to Pennsylvania. Shirley was a very giving person; everyone knew that they were welcome at Shirley’s house. Above all else, Shirley most enjoyed spending time with family and her furry companions. Her life was as beautiful as the flowers that she loved so well, and her influence will forever remain in the lives of all who knew her. Her beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of her children: Thomas (Tammy) Richards, of Navarre, Ohio, Jim (Tracie) Richards, of Taylorsville, Kentucky, Stacy (Joe) Klotz, of Massillon, Ohio, & Matthew (Kristina) Richards, of Massillon, Ohio, Ten grandchildren Brittany (Steven) Richards, Michael (Candice) Richards, Bridget (Dustin) Klotz, Becca (Shawn) Klotz, Hunter Klotz, Kefton Klotz, Nathan Richards, Sierra Richards, Christina (Chris) Richards, & Brandon (Bri) Richards, six great-grandchildren; Abby, Aiden, Caleb, Lucas, Sophia & Connor, one sister, Linda (Royce) Mays-Collins., two nieces and three nephew's.
Shirley had many canine companions over the years that were very important to her. Some of them include Molly, Buddy, Lacy, Louie, Fajita, B.J., Arnold, J.D., Baby, Sheeba, Sky, Rebel, Alec, and many more.
A celebration of life be held in Shirleys honor as opposed to traditional funeral services. We request all of Shirley’s friends & loved ones to join us in celebrating her beautiful life at Navarre Civic Center on Monday June 19 from 1:00pm-6:00pm. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to help cover funeral expenses. Donations can be made to any Huntington Bank to help defray funeral expenses or “Shirley’s Memorial Fund” on gofundme.com.
