Samuel J. ‘Big Sam’ DeMando age 76 of Massillon passed away Tuesday August 9, 2005. Sam was born December 21, 1928 in New York City to the late Ignazio & Stella (Stania) DeMando and lived in Massillon most of his life. During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corp in Europe. Sam was employed at Republic Steel for 42 years and retired in 1985. ‘Big Sam’ as he was known to all, was a union representative and served as a Trustee on the Executive Board of the Steel Workers Union Local 1124. He was a former president of the Massillon Trade & Labor Council. He was president of the Italian-American Club for 22 years. Sam was very involved in the children Christmas Party sponsored by the employees of Republic Steel. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Anthony, Charles & Joseph DeMando. He is survived by Daughter Susan DeMando of Gaithersburg, MD Former wife Ethel Risher of Massillon Brother Frank DeMando of Massillon And many nieces and nephews A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 AM Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Fr. Raymond Paul will officiate. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call 6-8 PM Friday at the Paquelet Funeral Home in Massillon.
