SAMUEL "SAM" GEORGE EDGAR JR. Sam's life on earth is over and he is resting in the arms of Jesus. He is surrounded by the loved ones who have gone before him. Sam age 82, peacefully passed away on Thursday, September 1, 2011 at The Laurels of Massillon after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease. He was born at Massillon City Hospital on August 28, 1929 to the late Samuel George Edgar, Sr. and Emma Gertrude (Swihart) Edgar. He was a graduate of Washington High School. He married Hazel Louise Wolfe on August 19, 1967 and she survives him. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy (Submarine Service) at 17 years of age on March 4, 1947 and received an honorable discharge on August 22, 1956. Following Military service, Sam worked for Griscom-Russell Company, Babcock and Wilcox Company, and retired from the Ford Motor Company in Canton, Ohio after 23 years of service. He enjoyed spending time with his family, hunting, traveling, and woodworking. He was a lifelong member of First Christian Church of Massillon. He was a life member of AMVETS, COD Base USSVI in Cleveland, Ohio, NRA, Ohio Gun Collectors Association, Primetime Seniors Group member, and the Tuesday morning AA Group at St. Joseph's. In addition to his wife he is survived by one son, Samuel (Pia) George Edgar III of Aurora, CO and one daughter Pamela (Douglas) Lyn Goldsworthy of Hendersonville, NC. Four grandchildren, Damon M. J. Goldsworthy , Thomas H., Emily H. and Kevin H. Edgar, as well as by several nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by his toy poodle, Sugar. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife Clara Belle (Liechty) Edgar, a sister, Mary Alice (Edgar) Todd, and a brother-in-law, Robert Lee Todd, Sr. Funeral Services will be held at the First Christian Church of Massillon on Thursday, September 8, 2011 at 1 P.M. Rev. Ralph Ricksecker, Jr., and Rev. Dr. John States, officiating. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 7, 2011 from 2 to 4 P.M. and 6 to 8 P.M. at The Paquelet Funeral Home, 1100 Wales Rd. N.E. Massillon, OH 44646. Visitation will also be held from 12 noon until the time of service at the church. Following the service, burial will follow at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Sam's memory to the First Christian Church Memorial Fund, 1020 Wales Rd. NE, Massillon, OH 44646 or The Alzheimer's Association, 408 Ninth Street S.W., Canton, OH 44707. The family would like to thank the staff of The Inn at University Village, The Laurels of Massillon, and Crossroads Hospice for their kind and compassionate care.
