Ruth M. (Hughes-Halter) Popiel Ruth M. Popiel, age 90 of Norton passed away Tuesday at her daughter's home in Perry Hts. Ruth was born on March 6, 1928 in Canton to the late (Charles) Dewey and Blanche (Peterson) Hughes and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1946. Ruth was in retail management most of her life for Polsky's and O'Neil's and other small shops over the years. She was also a realtor with Cutler in Akron before retiring. Ruth was an avid reader, loved music, Jim Beam, martinis, gardening, football, traveling, spending time at the cottage at Mohican and wintering on the beach in Florida. She was "mom" to many of her daughter's friends and also many young women that worked for her over the years. She was well-respected in the local retail community and was always the epitome of style and beauty. She was an awesome dancer, especially the jitterbug. Ruth was tiny but formidable and had a strength of character and resilience that few people have. Even suffering from a very difficult disease, she showed grace and courage and never complained. She was an inspiration to us all. Ruth was a beloved wife, mother, step-mother, sister, aunt and friend and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. She was preceded in death by her parents, Blanche Naetzel and Dewey Hughes and former husband John "Jay" Halter and “adopted” daughter Cheryl Ferris. Ruth leaves to cherish her memory her husband Richard W. Popiel of Norton with whom she shared 41 years of marriage, two daughters: Susanne (David) Harrison and Carole (Ross) Mariol, four step-children: Diane (Nick) Lazor, Denise (Larry) Chimento, R. Lance (Penny) Popiel and Dean Popiel and a brother Charles "Dick" Hughes, nieces Loretta and Lorraine,14 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank Jennifer, Diamond, Margaret and Angie at Crossroads Hospice for their excellent care and especially Ruth's caregiver, Tracey Seaton who took wonderful, tender loving care of mom for so long. A celebration of Ruth's life will be held at 1:30 Monday, August 13, 2018, in the Paquelet Funeral Home in Massillon with Kevin O'Brien as celebrant. Visitation will be from 12:30-1:30 prior to the service Monday. Burial will follow at Sunset Hills Memory Gardens.
