Russell R. Ramsey

Russell R. Ramsey, age 77 of Massillon passed away Wednesday June 20, 2007 at the Mercy Medical Center. Russ was born July 11, 1929 in Massillon to the late Russell & Rhea (Piper) Ramsey. A 1947 graduate of Washington High School and a 1951 graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University, he then earned a Masters of Education Degree from Kent State University in 1960. He began a 37 year career with the Massillon Schools; teaching at Lorin Andrews and Longfellow Junior High Schools. He became a principal serving at York, Harvey, Horace Mann, Bowers and retired from Gorrell in 1989. In the 50s, Russ coached football and basketball at both LA and Longfellow and helped with the Tigers. For a number of years he taught English Literature at Akron University. Russ was a member of the Ohio Education Asso., the Massillon Education Asso., Sigma Chi Fraternity, Tiger Booster Club, Hall of Fame Luncheon Club and Touchdown Club. For 25 years he ran the scoreboard at Tiger Stadium and for 26 years the scoreboard for Tiger Basketball. He is survived by his wife Helen with whom he shared 53 years of marriage on June 12, 2007. There are two sons and daughters in Law: Mark & Gena Ramsey Sr. and Michael W. & Lori Ramsey. In addition there are six grandchildren: Tiffany (Jonathan) Blood, Mark (fiancé Michelle) Ramsey Jr., Dawn (fiancé John) Ramsey, Krystal Ramsey, Michael C. Ramsey and Joanne Ramsey. And one great granddaughter, Gabrielle Blood. Funeral service will be 10:30 AM Monday at the Paquelet Funeral Home in Massillon, the Rev. Robert Groenke will officiate. Burial will be at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. Friends may call Sunday 4-8 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Washington High School Scholarship Fund.
