Rosemary Altland, 95, of Massillon, passed away Sunday, December 25, 2016 at Smithville Western Nursing Home. Rosemary was born on August 29, 1921 in Sterling, Ohio the daughter of the late John and Mabel (Johnston) Blough. She was a 1939 graduate of Smithville High School. Following High School, she attended the Canton Academy of Beauty Culture and worked as a beauty consultant. She joined the United States Naval Coast Guard on August 19, 1943 and was honorably discharged on May 18, 1946. Rosemary trained in Palm Beach, FL to work as a store keeper. She served at New Orleans. Rosemary returned to Ohio and worked as a beauty consultant. On April 10, 1948 she married John Robert "Bob" Altland and they shared 58 years of marriage, until his death in 2006. Rosemary worked at the Country Lawn Nursing as a cook and also as a Republican Poll Worker. They enjoyed traveling, fishing, crafts, cooking, and attending church at St. Clements (Holy Family Parish) in Navarre. For many years she volunteered at the Northwest Senior Center in Canal Fulton and she was a member of the AARP 3336. Along with her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Richard J. "Dick" Blough and Ray Emerson Blough; and her sister, Twila May Neff. She is survived by her children, James Robert Altland of King of Prussia, PA, Donald Paul and Susie Altland of Groesbeck, TX and Barbara Messenger-Gray and Tim Gray of Grants Lick, KY; grandchildren, Kelley, and John Altland, and Amber Bankemper and William Messenger; great-grandchildren, Miles and Oscar Bankemper; step-grandchildren, Tim Brock, Cherita Lueck and Pam and Ian Gray; step-great-grandchildren, Jason and Kaley Brock; brother, Dale and Mildred Blough; and sister, Gail and Walter Sniff. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, December 31, 2016 at 10 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church in Navarre. Interment will follow at St. Clement Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Paquelet Funeral Home in Massillon on Friday, from 6-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the National Cancer Society.
