Robert R. “Bob” Klinge, age 97, of Massillon died Friday, October 8, 2010, at the Inn at University Village. He was born August 12, 1913, in Montgomery, Alabama, to the late John H. Klinge and Rocepha (Rouse) Klinge. He spent his early childhood in Montgomery, Alabama, before moving to Cleveland and later Massillon. Bob attended and graduated from Massillon’s Washington High School where he was a member of the Tiger Marching Band. He attended the Ohio State University’s College of Engineering where he majored in chemical engineering. Bob spent his working career in Massillon with Pulp Products and then served as District Chief Chemist for the Massillon and Canton’s Central Alloy District of Republic Steel Corporation until his retirement. Bob was a member of the American Standard Testing Materials national organization, serving on many committees and making presentations during his distinguished chemical engineering career. Bob was named a Lundell-Bright Memorial winner in 1976. Bob moved Republic Steel’s analysis procedures from wet chemistry to analysis by spectrographic and electronic equipment during his career with the company. Bob served as committee member of the Boy Scouts of America, helped with the formation of the Jackson Little League Organization and was a member of the Ohio State University Alumni Association. Bob loved music and attended many Columbus Symphony and Central Ohio Symphony concerts in his later years. A memorial collection of his compact music discs has been established at Ohio Wesleyan University’s College of Music. Bob was a member of Massillon’s Central Presbyterian Church where he held the distinction of being that congregation’s oldest member in consecutive years of membership (84 currently). In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his wife Mary Louise (Wallace) Klinge, and brother Dr. J.E. Klinge. Bob is survived by his daughter Nancy (Ron) Ulm of North Canton, OH and son John of Delaware, OH; two grandsons Greg (Kristin) Ulm of Medina, OH, and Eric (Chana) Ulm of Atlanta, GA; one granddaughter Amy (Dan) Shupe of Gahanna, OH; nine great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Ann (Barry) Miller and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends Wednesday, October 13th from 10 to 11 A.M. at Central Presbyterian Church, Massillon, OH followed by funeral services at 11:00 A.M. Interment will follow in Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. Donations in Bob’s memory may be made to the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, the Ohio State Alumni Association or to the Central Presbyterian Church.
