Robert Eugene Hickey

Robert Eugene Hickey, age 85, of Massillon passed away Sunday November 2, 2008. The caring staffs of Shady Lawn Nursing Home and Asera Care Hospice eased his passing. Robert was born on May 7, 1923 in Bucyrus, Ohio to the late James and Marguerite Hickey. The family moved to Massillon when Robert was in the first grade. He graduated from Massillon Washington High School in 1942 and remained a Tigers fan throughout his life. Robert was a proud member of the United Steel Workers of America having worked at Burger Steel, Tyson Bearing Corporation and Republic Steel. He retired after thirty-five years of service in Republic’s Union Drawn Division. It was at Tyson Bearing Corporation that Robert met Martha Jane Omicinski, whom he wed on August 6, 1945. They were married for sixty-three years. Robert built their beautiful home, which was a tremendous source of pride for both of them. He was a member of Saint Joseph’s Parish in Massillon where he volunteered for many years in the Monday food kitchen and Thursday bingo. Robert was preceded in death by his beloved wife Martha, his parents and siblings: brothers, James Hickey, Thomas Hickey, John Hickey and sister Alice Williams. Survived by daughters Carole (Timothy) Spicer of Massillon, Kathleen Green of Massillon, Jeanne Hickey of Massillon, Paula Hickey (Robin Shilkret) of Maryland; sister Rosemary Failor; grandchildren, Kelli (Nicholas Hill) Green and Mathew (Sharon) Green, Aaron (Charity) Spicer and Robert Hickey (Heather Peddicord); great grandchildren, Storm and Millena Spicer, Makenna and Meghan Greenhill, Isabel Green and Ayden Hickey. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday November 7 at 11 a.m. at St. Barbara's Catholic Church. Inurnment will follow at Saint Joseph’s Cemetery. Friends may call on Friday from 9:00-10:45 a.m. at the Paquelet Funeral Home.
