Robert E. ‘Flash’ Oliver Sr. age 78 of Massillon passed away December 18, 2018. Flash was born September 21, 1940 in Reinzi, MS to the late Moses & Birdine (Gilmer) Oliver. He was a 1960 graduate of Washington High School. Flash was an active member of Friendship Baptist Church where he served as President on the usher board, ICUA. He retired from LTV after 50 years. Robert was an avid lover of all sports, especially the Dallas Cowboys and LA Lakers. In High School he ran track, hence “Flash”, played basketball, and was a 3 year starter on the football team (1959 State and National Championship Team). He was on the Hot Stove Championship Baseball Team. He played and sponsored many softball teams and tournaments all over Ohio. He also sponsored a ladies bowling team (M&B Oliver). Robert was also active in the community having served as president of the Massillon Recreation Board for 2 years. He was a member of Doric Lodge #69 PHA - Ohio and served in various capacities in the Tuscarawas Lodge #632 Elks IBPOE of W. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Marlisa Johnson and a sister Mildred Turpin. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Carolyn (Moore) Oliver; children, Robin Oliver Johnson, Mark (Christine) Jones, Michael A. Moore and Robert E. (Lori Fountain) Oliver Jr.; two sisters and a brother, Lily Kelly, Geraldine (Midloskia) Fite Sr. and Kenneth Oliver; 8 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren; special “Other Brothers” Robert C. Redvine and Michael Winn; and special little buddies, Eric Jr., Aaron & Ethan Spencer and Kimberly Bigbee. A Celebration of Robert Oliver’s life will be 10:30 AM Saturday December 29th at Friendship Baptist Church. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery.
