Robert A. Layton, age 88 of Massillon, passed away at his home on Monday, May 10, 2010 surrounded by his family. He was born on July 26, 1921 in Winsted, CT and was the son of the late George, Sr. and Mary (Paro) Layton. He was a Massillon resident since 1934. Bob spent a year in the C.C.C., five years in the U.S. Army and was a survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor. He was a member of the Akron-Canton Pearl Harbor Survivors Association. He retired from the Massillon Post Office in 1981 following 38 years of service. He was a member of the Clinton Lodge #47 F. & A.M., the Knights Templar, the Royal and Select Masons of Ohio and the Grand Chapter of the Royal Arch Masons. Bob and his wife Frances, organized the Massillon Area Tag-Along camping club in 1964. The remaining members meet weekly for breakfast. They are both members of St. John’s United Church of Christ. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, George Layton, Jr., James E. Layton, Wilson Layton and Clarence Layton and his sisters, Ethel Layton White and Virginia Layton Rabinow. He is survived by his wife, Frances Wren Layton, with whom he spent nearly 65 years of marriage, his daughters and sons –in-law, Cora –Lee and Mark Smith of North Canton and Candy and Gary Viens of Massillon, his grandchildren, Joshua (Beth Ann) Smith of South Ogden, UT, Matthew Smith and Michael Smith both of Lakewood, OH and Jared and Dana Viens of New Port Richey, FL, his great grandson Hunter Viens, his sister. Mabel Layton of Long Beach, CA and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Robert Layton will take place on Thursday at 7 P.M. at the Paquelet Funeral Home with Rev. Jeffrey Shultz officiating. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 6:00 – 7:00 P.M. The Clinton Lodge will conduct a Masonic service on Thursday at 5:15 P.M.
