Richard C. “Dick” Backus, age 74 of Massillon, died Saturday afternoon, April 22, 2005 at Mercy Medical Center. He was born on May 4, 1931 in Canton, Ohio and was the son of the late Arnold and Lillian (Colvin) Backus. Upon graduation from high school, Dick enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served his country for 9 years. He then began a career as a long distance truck driver. He was of Methodist faith. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post 3124, the Brewster Moose and the Sons of Herman. He was an avid golfer and bowler. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Walter Backus in 2005. He is survived by his wife, Mary A. (Kouth) Backus, whom he married on June 21, 1958, his children and their spouses, Michael and Marsha Backus of Dansville, NY, Jeffrey Backus, Scott Backus, Rev. Douglas and Dr. Donna Backus, Julie and Jamie Hamilton and Bradley Backus all of Massillon, 10 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and his sister and brother in law, Nancy and Bill Condo of Massillon. Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday at 11:00 A.M. at Justus United Methodist Church with Rev. Tal Lewis officiating. Interment will follow in Newman Creek Cemetery. Friends may call at the Arnold-Lynch Funeral Home on Wednesday from 6-8 P.M. and on Wednesday at the church one hour before the service.
