Reverend Monsignor John J. Daum, pastor emeritus of St. Barbara Parish, Massillon died on Tuesday May 2, 2006. He was 91 years old. Monsignor Daum was born August 19, 1914 in Canton, a son of John & Mary (Lair) Daum, the third of six children. He attended St. Peter’s Grade School and McKinley High School in Canton. He studied at St. Charles College in Cantonsville, MD and completed his studies at St. Mary’s Seminary in Cleveland. He later attended the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, IN. He was ordained May 26, 1945 by Bishop James McFadden. Following ordination, Monsignor Daum served as assistant pastor at St. Mary Parish, Warren (1945-1953), where he served until being named the Newman Chaplain of Kent State University (1953-1961), and later became assistant pastor at St. Patrick Parish, Kent (1961-1965). He was named pastor at St. Barbara Parish, Massillon in 1965 and served there until his retirement on July 1, 1984. He was named a Prelate of Honor on April 5, 2000. During his ministry, Msgr. Daum has served in a long list of diocesan and community activities. He has served as director and chaplain to the Stark County Deanery of National Council of Catholic Women, as Chaplain to the Massillon General Assembly Knights of Columbus #554 and Chaplain to the Bishop Massillon Assembly of the Fourth Degree, and a part time teacher at the former Mercy Hospital. He was also active as a board member of the United Way of Western Stark County, Assistant Spiritual Director of Stark County Cursillo and as chaplain to the Stark County Council of Catholic Nurses. He is survived by a brother & sister in law, Robert & Kathleen Daum of Bradenton, FL, thirteen nieces, nephews and numerous great nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by four sisters and brother: Rose, Carl, Pauline Duerr and Helen Young. Arrangements are with the Paquelet Funeral Home, 1100 Wales Rd. N. E., Massillon. Calling hours will be Sunday 2-4 PM, May 7th at the funeral home. There will be a combined Scripture Service and K of C service at 3:45 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday May 8th at 11 A.M. at St. Barbara’s Catholic Church. He will lie in state at the church from 10 AM until the time of the service.
