Raymond E. Gene Phelps, age 74, of Canal Fulton, Ohio, formerly of Indianapolis, entered into eternal rest Friday morning at the Rose Lane Nursing Home in Massillon, Ohio. Gene was born in Mattoon, Illinois on December 29, 1932 to the late Raymond and Fern (Hunt) Phelps. After graduating from Southport High School, he went on to study at Butler University where he earned a degree in Business with the class of 1954. Gene enlisted in the Army in 1954 to serve our country. He married his beloved wife, Janice Stone on December 30, 1961. After 34 years of loyal service, Gene retired from Mayflower Transit where he was a traffic planner. He was an avid sports fan who truly enjoyed watching basketball and football. Gene attended Cornerstone Baptist Church in Massillon, Ohio. He is preceded in death by his parents. Survived by wife, Janice (Stone) Phelps of Canal Fulton, OH; three sons, Timothy and Danielle Phelps of Canal Fulton, OH, Kevin Phelps of Canal Fulton, OH, Keith Phelps of Canal Fulton, OH; two daughters, Angela Gonzalez of Defiance, OH, Wendy Phelps of San Francisco, CA; one sister, Patricia and Gary Clark of Greenwood, IN; grandchildren, Elizabeth and Emily Phelps, Dustin, Darren and Daniel Gonzalez, Amberly Badillo; three great- grandchildren. Friends may call from 6–8 p.m. on Monday at the Paquelet Funeral Home and one hour before the service at the church. The funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the Cornerstone Baptist Church. Interment will take place on Wednesday in Miller Cemetery near Borden, Indiana.
