Ray D. Getz age 87 of Strasburg, formerly of Massillon passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday Sept. 23, 2008. He was born in Massillon July 12, 1921 to the late John & Arabelle (Rinder) Getz. He was a 1941 graduate of Washington High School. He was co-captain of the 1940 Tiger football team coached by Paul Brown. He then attended Baldwin-Wallace College and Bowling Green University. Ray enlisted in the Marines in 1943, serving in the Pacific, where he received a Purple Heart for action at Iwo Jima. Following WW II he was employed by Tyson Roller Bearing Co. and retired in 1983. Ray is a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, K of C. #554, Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity, Disabled American Veterans and a former member of the Hall of Fame Luncheon Club. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph L. Getz and a sister, Betty M Lash. Ray will be forever missed by his wife of 63 years, Evelyn (Gartland) Getz of the residence; two daughters and sons in law, Joyce & James Schnell of Strasburg and Susan & Aaron Braucher of Jackson Twp.; brother-in-law, Raymond W. Gartland of Massillon; three grandchildren, Amy Jo (Heath) Sanders, Betsy (Worl) Evans and Jay Braucher and his fiancé Kris Krueger all of Jackson Twp.; his cherished great grandsons, Brock Colman Sanders and Benjamin Ray Sanders and his long time special friends, the Hugh Long Family of Jackson Twp. Services for Ray Getz will be 2 PM Friday at the Paquelet Funeral Home in Massillon. Burial will be at Rose Hill Memorial Park. Friends may call Friday from 1 PM until the service at the funeral home. The family would appreciate contributions to the Hospice of Tuscarawas County.
