Phyllis Ann Slicker, L.P.N., 88, died of a broken heart on Saturday, April 19, 2014 unexpectedly two months after the death of her husband, whom she accompanied everywhere. She was born in Sebring on January 7, 1926 to the late Donald and Grace (Shipman) Pettay. Phyllis was a graduate of Washington High School, Class of 1943 and The Washington High School Evening Nursing Class and worked at many doctor's offices in the area but was best known as Dr. Phyllis for the work that she did at Dr's. Underwood and Kovac's office in Navarre. She retired in 1989 but never lost contact with her many friends that she made while nursing. On June 16, 1945 she married the late James P. Slicker and started their 68 years together. They spent their time along the Ohio River camping, boating, sun bathing, traveling, ballroom dancing and socializing. In 1976 they moved their social times to Rocky Pine Campground at Salt Fork State Park. She was a member of St. Barbara's Catholic Church, the L.P.N. Association and the St. Barbara's Women's Club. She is survived by her children Dena (Gene Blankenship) DeVaughn of Massillon and Don (Marilyn) Slicker of Cincinnati; grandchildren Andrea (Mike) Thompson, Becky (Andy) Newman, Sarah (Shawn) Arbuckle and Dustin (Allyson) DeVaughn; great grandchildren, Shirley, Madeline and Alaina and a sister. A special thank you to Merry Stokes for the care and love that she gave. She is also preceded in death by a daughter, Catherine L. Slicker and a brother. Following a family service at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens a Celebration of Life service will be held at the St. Barbara's Catholic Church in the Parish Life and Banquet Center at noon on Friday, April 25, 2014.
