Phillip C. "Jack' Glick age 79 of Massillon died unexpectedly on Saturday November 3, 2012 surrounded by his family at University Hospital in Cleveland as the result of a brain aneurism. He was born February 19, 1933 in Detroit to the late Maurice & Esther Glick. He spent his early years in the Harmon/Navarre area attended Navarre Elementary School. Later his family moved to East Greenville where his mother and step-father, Joe Madaffer, who owned and operated the Hacienda restaurant. He then attended Lorin Andrews Junior High and Washington High School graduating in 1951. He worked for several local contractors before enlisting and serving in the US Navy. He worked for the Timken Company and retired as a lab technician. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Phil was an avid sports fan and war history buff. He spent many hours watching the History and Military channels and sporting events on TV. His favorite team was the Massillon Tigers followed closely by the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Cleveland Indians. He had an amazing memory when it came to player names, games and individual statistics. He could give you details about Tiger coaches and players going back to the 1930's. He was able to give you the score of a game, how many yards an individual player gained in that game and other interesting facts. Local, state and national sports writers and broadcasters often contacted him for information about Tiger players and teams for stories they were writing. He spent many hours at the Massillon Public Library searching through microfilmed records of the Massillon Evening Independent to compile information for stories about the Tigers and games that they had played. This information was listed in the Media Guides that were published periodically. He worked closely with Junie Studer on the history of the Massillon Tiger football program. He served as the Booster Club historian until he retired from the position several years ago. Phil was very active in the Massillon Tiger Football Booster Club. He was Booster Club President in 1988 and he often said that he felt very fortunate to have been allowed to serve with such a dedicated group of people and to have been part of the great Tiger tradition. Lee Owens was hired to coach the Tigers in 1988 and Phil developed a very close relationship with Lee and his staff and that relationship continued to the present time. He also had been a member of the Tiger Sideliners and the Touchdown Club. When the state football playoffs were held each fall, Phil really enjoyed the five weeks the games were played. Each week he would go over the game match ups in each division and try to pick the winners. After all 372 games had been played; his record for picking the winners was over 60%. Great record Phil. He will be deeply missed by his three children and their spouses: Steve & Liz Glick of Wooster, Joe & Jeanne Glick of Beach City and Christy & Jim Glasson of Jackson Twp.; there are four grandchildren: Edward (Beth) Glick, Melissa Glick, Sonia (Travis) Glick-Ullum, and Samantha "Sammie" Glick and a great grandson, Bryce.
