Patricia Dougherty

June 11, 1927 — July 5, 2020

On Sunday, July 5th, Patricia Dougherty’s life came to its conclusion on this earth. It is with sorrow and joy, her family shares this news with all of her friends, of which there were many. In fact, Patty was still making new friends up through the final days of her blessed life. Sorrow because of our loss, but great joy, for her spirit to be called home to God’s kingdom. Patricia Dougherty (Moore) was born in Moundsville, WVA, on June 11th, 1927 to Rhea and Paul Moore of Brewster, Ohio. She was the middle of three children, with older and younger brothers, Glenn and Paul. Patty was quite a curious child. One summer day, much like today, her curiosity got the best of her. Staring into a drainage pipe, that extended an unknown distance, she had to know what was at the other end. Well, as Patty climbed through, she managed to get her 10 year old boney legs stuck in the pipe. The fire department had to come pull her out. She graduated from Brewster High School with the Class 0f 1944. It was there in high school she met her future husband and love of her life, Charles Dougherty. They would marry in November 1947, after Dad had returned from serving in the Army Air Corps during WWII. Mom trained to be a “Beautician” in the 40’s and worked as such throughout the first few years of marriage. Then, in 1952, with the arrival of their first baby daughter, Debbie, Mom settled in as a homemaker for the next several years. Chuck and Patty moved to Perry Township in the early 50’s and would call Perry their home for the remainder of their lives. Karen would arrive in 54’, Kevin in 58’, Diane in 59’ and Brian in 61’. She set a great example for all of us with her strength and good nature. These qualities were tested when Karen, the heart of our family, became ill in 5th grade. Karen would be a special needs child for the rest of her life, and Mom was her Number 1 caregiver, until Karen’s passing in 1993. After the kids were of school age, she returned to the workforce, with the opening of Belden Village. She spent the better part of five years working at Higbees Department store, where we would always beg her to take us to the Pronto Room, the in house restaurant at Higbees. The Christmas Season was her favorite time of year, and all of the grandchildren can testify that Grandma knew how to keep Christmas well. Every year, she had an additional nuance to add to the list of decorations. If there was a Mount Rushmore of shoppers, Mom would have been in contention, as she was a true pro when it came to the art of shopping! Patty also loved to travel with Dad, especially to Naples, Florida, where they had the good fortune to spend many winters together. She loved to cook, using her Mom’s hand written recipe cards. She also enjoyed planting her flowers every springtime, and watching the many birds that arrived to the bird feeders Dad so diligently kept filled. Patty was always learning, very inquisitive, with a love of reading, especially magazines! After Dad passed, Mom found great comfort in her Trinity United Methodist Church family. Wednesday evening choir practice was something she always looked forward to. One of the qualities of Mom we all will miss is, of course her smile. Anyone who ever met Patty will remember her grin and the bright, welcoming smile she had for everyone she met. Her smile was alive and well even into the final days of her life. We will miss her dearly, but know that she left this earth on the wings of grace, and grace alone. And by that grace she humbly entered before the throne of the living God, her savior, Christ Jesus. The family would like to express their deep and heartfelt gratitude to Visiting Angels of Canton, for taking care of Mom and helping to keep her at home. You were all so very special to her. We also would like to thank all of the wonderful folks at Aultman Hospice for helping her through the final days… “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy”. Matthew 5:7 Patty was preceded in death by her husband Charles, and daughter Karen. Patty leaves behind daughters Debbie (Dave) Musolff of Bad Axe Michigan, Diane Dougherty & Ronda Selway of Akron. Along with sons Brian Dougherty of Canton, and Kevin & Sandee Dougherty of Canton. In addition, she leaves behind her grandchildren, Amanda, Dan, Emily, Ellen, Chelsea, Megan, Rachel, Joshua and Samuel. Also great grandchildren Quentin, Kuper, Maizie, Henry, Vivian, and Maya. A Celebration of Patty’s life will be held on Wednesday, July 8, 2020 at 11 a.m. at the Paquelet & Arnold-Lynch Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10-11 a.m. on Wednesday before the service. If you’d like to honor Patty’s memory might we suggest a donation to either, Stark County Board of Developmental Disabilities or Aultman Hospice.
