Mildred Pierce Howell, age 95, passed away Friday, January 27, 2006 at Shady Lawn Nursing Center, after an extended illness. She was born June 21, 1910 in Waco, Ohio to James and Amelia “Minnie” Pierce. She spent her childhood in Canal Fulton, Ohio and then moved to Massillon as a young adult. Mildred joined the work force during World War II, sewing U.S. Army tents and knapsacks at the Igelstroem Co. She later worked at several garment factories as a seamstress and retired from Perry Rubber Co. Mildred enjoyed playing games in several ladies clubs and playing board games with her family. She also loved needlework, making many quilts and also enjoyed travel. She took a trip to Europe, to Hawii, and drove over most of the United States. She drove to Alaska with her sister shortly after her retirement in 1975. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Clarence Howell; a son, Robert Howell; a sister, Helen Buhecker; a grandson, Timothy Smith. She is survived by her son, Milton (Margaret) Howell; daughter, Evelyn (Donald) Stryffeler; daughter, Donna (Duane) Fildes; daughter-in-law, Joanne Howell; 13 grandchildren; Richard Howell, Daniel Cosgrove, Ronald Smith, Clarence Cosgrove, Daniel Stephan, Cindy Donovan, Randall Stephan, Thomas Smith, Gerald Howell, Jay Howell, Greg Howell, Robert Stephan, Jr. and Laura Stephan; 15 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren; a nephew and several nieces. Funeral service will be held Tuesday, January 31, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at the Paquelet Funeral Home in Massillon. Calling hours will be held one hour prior to the service.
