Melvin M. Mingle, age 87 of Massillon, passed away on May 21, 2011. He was born on February 10, 1924 to the late Jesse E. and Mary (Hines) Mingle in Nashville, TN. Melvin married Ruth E. Luther on January 12, 1946 in Franklin, KY. Mr. Mingle was a resident of Massillon since 1952. He worked at L & N Railroad Shops in Nashville before entering the Navy on December 2, 1942. Melvin served in the South Pacific aboard the U.S.S. Montpelier and the U.S.S. Heyliger. He was honorably discharged on December 2, 1945. Melvin moved his family to Massillon and began working for Wheeling & Lake Erie Railroad (Nickel Plate). He worked for the railroad for 34 years retiring on June 30, 1985. He was a member of the Massillon Lions Club for 25 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church where he served as a trustee and an usher. He is survived by Ruth, his wife of 65 years and two daughters, Linda (Chuck) Shepherd of Utica, OH and Janice (Bob) Mullen of Grandy, NC, his grandchildren, Jeff (Andrea) Shepherd of Ashland, OH, Tim Shepherd of Kent, OH, Amanda Mullen of Norfolk, VA and Janine Mullen of Grandy, NC and one great grandson, Colton Shepherd of Ashland, OH Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his son Robert, two sisters and one brother. Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday at 11:00 A.M. at the Paquelet & Arnold-Lynch Funeral Home with Dr. Roger Alber officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. The Massillon Lions Club will hold a service at 5:30 P.M. on Wednesday.
