Melville L. “Mel” Wagner, Jr., 91 of Massillon, died on Friday, November 26, 2010 at Amherst Meadows. He was born on March 1, 1919 in Massillon and was the son of the late Melville L. and Martha Ann (Lahm) Wagner. Mel was a lifelong area resident. Mel graduated from Washington High in 1937. He served his country in the Army Air Corps during World War II as a B-25 bomber pilot with U.S. Fifth Air Force. He then went on to work for Republic Steel where he was an engineer. He retired from there in 1981. Mel was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ, the Massillon Lion’s Club, where he was a past president, the Clinton Lodge #47 F.& A.M. and the Scottish Rite, Valley of Canton. He is survived by his wife, Leona I. (Fothergill) Wagner, whom he married on May 17, 1944, his sons and their wives, Tom and Julie Wagner of Columbus, OH and Bob and Cindy Wagner of Massillon, his grandchildren, Ryan Wagner, Josh Wagner, Megan Wagner, Jennifer and her husband Niklas Gerborg and Jeremy and his wife Angela Wagner and great grandchildren, Jack, Lukas and Sophie Gerborg. Burial will follow at Brookfield Cemetery. A service to celebrate the life of Mel Wagner will take place on Tuesday, November 30th at 11:00 A.M. at the Paquelet & Arnold-Lynch Funeral Home with Rev. Jeffrey Shultz officiating. The family will receive friends on Monday from 6-8 P.M. at the funeral home. There will be a Masonic service at 5:00 P.M. and a Lion’s Club service at 5:30 P.M. on Monday evening. The family would like to thank both the staff at Amherst Meadows and Harbor Light Hospice for the comfort and care they gave Mel. Those who wish may make a memorial contribution in his name to St. John’s United Church of Christ, the Massillon Lion’s Club or Harbor Light Hospice.
