Max Hartong, 27, passed away on November 15th after suffering critical medical complications that developed as he completed the Miami Iron Man competition. Max was sincere, fun-loving, driven, whole-hearted and intelligent. He was a natural leader who made others feel seen through his relentless positive spirit. Max was an adoring husband to his wife Taylor, a cherished son to his parents Bryan and Cindy, and a supportive friend to so many through each stage of his life.
Max was born on July 4th, 1995, in Akron, Ohio and grew up in nearby Canton. Max attended Jackson High School, graduating with the Class of 2014. He continued his education at Jacksonville University where he was captain of his Division I lacrosse team. After receiving his Bachelor's degree in Finance from JU, he worked at SCS Engineers as a financial analyst and was the JV lacrosse coach at Nease High School. Max then pursued his dreams by starting law school at the University of Miami in 2020. During his only year at Miami, Max finished first in his class, receiving multiple awards for his academic excellence. Max transferred to Harvard Law School the next year, expecting to graduate in May 2023. Max pursued an externship with the US Attorney's Office and planned to work at Cleary Gottlieb in New York City upon graduation. He had aspirations for a future in public service. Max was a committed history buff whose beloved dog was named after Winston Churchill. Max's love for adventure and the outdoors inspired him to take incredible journeys and climb formidable mountains, including Mt. Rainier (two times!). Max’s joy became complete in May 2022 when he married his high school sweetheart, Taylor (Wiseman) Hartong. Max embraced every moment of his life and left his imprint on everyone he encountered.
Max is survived by his devoted wife, Taylor (Wiseman) Hartong; parents, Bryan and Cindy Hartong; sisters, Mikaela (Travis) McLaughlin, Cameryn Hartong, and Chandler (Andrew) Adolph; parents-in-law, Scott and Robbin (Schirack) Wiseman; sister-in-law, Danielle Wiseman; grandparents Jerry and Judy Mauser; and grandmother-in-law, Judy (Seifert) Schirack.
