Martha Jane Hickey

December 3, 1924 — September 13, 2008

Martha Jane (Omicinski) Hickey, age 83, of Massillon passed away Saturday, September 13, 2008. Through most of her lengthy illness she was cared for at home by her loving husband and daughters. Recently, the caring staffs of Shady Lawn Nursing Home and Asera Care Hospice eased her passing. Martha was born on December 3, 1924 in Dillonvale, Ohio to the late Leo and Pollie (Zascavage) Omicinski, Sr. After graduating from high school there in 1942, she moved with her parents to Massillon. Martha worked at the Tyson Bearing Corporation during World War II, where she met Robert Eugene Hickey. They were married at St. Mary’s Catholic Church on August 6, 1945. Martha worked as head cashier at Loblaw’s and Big D at the Towne Plaza, and as a cook at Indian River School and Massillon City Schools, retiring in 1989. Martha served as the assistant leader for Girl Scout Troop 346 and coached girls’ softball for a number of years. Her vegetable and flower gardens were a delight for any passers-by. There are many beautiful plants blooming near and far today that first got their roots in Martha’s hands. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish in Massillon, where she volunteered for many years at the Monday food kitchen and Thursday bingo. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Rose Bourquin. Survived by Husband Robert Hickey of Massillon Daughters Carole and Timothy Spicer of Massillon Kathleen Green of Massillon Jeanne Hickey of Massillon Paula Hickey (Robin Shilkret) of Maryland Brothers Leo Jr. and Watson Omicinski Grandchildren Kelli (Nicholas Hill) Green and Matthew (Sharon) Green; Aaron (Charity) Spicer; and Robert (Heather Peddicord) Hickey.
