Mark Carlton Durkee, D.D.S., Ph.D. Massillon, Ohio- Mark Carlton Durkee, D.D.S., Ph.D., age 65, quietly passed away at home on Wednesday, January 19, 2022. Mark was born in Germany on January 11, 1957 and was preceded in death by his father, Frank P. Durkee, and mother, Carol (Smiley) Durkee. Survivors include his wife, J. Suzanne Durkee of Massillon, OH, and sons, Kyle and Ryan; his sister, Joanne (Durkee) Herrick of Tunbridge, VT, her husband Ralph, nephew Kevin, and nieces, Suzie and Kayla; his brother, Scott Durkee of New Haven, VT, his wife, Elizabeth; and his brother, Eric Durkee of Grafton, NH, and his wife, Chris. Mark was an avid lover of education. After high school, he attended Trenton State College, graduating with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering (May 1980), and through Lehigh University attained his Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering (June 1982). After several years in private industry, he decided to pursue a career in dentistry. Mark attended the University of Maryland graduating Magna Cum Laude with his D.D.S. (May 1991). While at the university, he met and married his loving wife, Suzi, August 1, 1992. With educational devotion, Mark completed his Certificate in Orthodontics (June 1996) and Ph.D. in Anatomy (July 1996) at the University of Maryland. Upon accepting a faculty position at West Virginia University School of Dentistry, Mark and his family relocated to Morgantown, WV in July 1996. After teaching for seven years, Dr. Durkee and his family moved to Massillon, OH in June 2003 to enter private practice, faithfully serving the community until his death. Mark was also a devoted husband and father. As an exceptional cook, he enjoyed cooking for his family. Mark also loved playing the trumpet and saxophone with his sons, Kyle and Ryan, and listening to music, especially Jazz. He was talented at drawing funny cartoon pictures. Mark loved fishing, watching movies, and playing video games with his family. Mark will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. A private memorial service will be held at a later date with the family only.
