Marie Sherrod

Marie Sherrod (aka Marie Kelly), a long-time former resident of Massillon, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 28, 2011 in Columbus, Ohio. She was born in Booneville, Mississippi on July 9, 1921 to the late Mitchell and Adlena (McGhee) Miller. Marie came to Massillon in 1948 serving this community with distinction until 2003, when she moved to Columbus to spend her latter years with close family there. Marie was a professional dry cleaner, employed in several notable businesses, including Quality and Blairs Cleaners in Massillon and Canton Ohio. She served as a dedicated member, officer and lay minister in several local churches, including True Church House of Prayer under the leadership of Mother Mable Riley, Full Gospel Temple under Rev. Elvester Keeton, and especially Morning Star United Holy Church under Pastor John Jones. She loved missionary duties, always practiced hospitality, and taught many about the value of giving sacrificially to those in need and of supporting those in formal ministry. Marie loved fashion, social occasions, and most of all spending quality time with friends and family. Predeceasing Marie were husband, Wesley Rowland; brothers Eugene, Otis, and James and Sister, Erie Spencer; and her dear son, Charles W. Rowland, Sr. Marie leaves to cherish her memory: two sisters, Lula Grizzard of Massillon and Emma Williams of Columbus and one brother J. C. Miller of Columbus; four grandchildren Sherrene Moore, Charles W. Rowland, Jr., David Rowland, and Aaron Rowland; three Great Grandchildren, Deanna Rowland, Tonya Moore, and DeAndre Moore; one Great Great Granddaughter, Erin-Miah Moore; and a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends. Services will be held on Wednesday, October 5, 2011 at Morning Star United Holy Church, 1128 Walnut Rd S.E. Massillon, Pastor Michael Clemmons, officiating. Calling hours 9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.; followed by funeral service at 11:00 a.m.
