Lucille Joiner

September 21, 1931 — February 7, 2021

Lucille (Jones-Person) Joiner, the youngest child of Joe and Douglas (Mathis) Jones, was born on September 21, 1931, in Bowdon, Georgia (Carroll County). During the Great Migration, Joe and Douglas moved the Jones family to Massillon, Ohio (Stark County), where Lucille lived the remainder of her life. Lucille entered into a peaceful sleep on Sunday morning, February 7, 2021. Born in a small southern town, Lucille was a farmgirl who was raised by her loving parents and grandparents. As the only daughter, she loved playing with her elder brothers and learned to balance her shy, soft-spoken qualities with her silent, but ever-present strength of character. Lucille’s formal education began when she attended Bowdon Public Schools and Massillon City Schools in her formative years. After graduating from Washington High School in 1950, she married the man who joined her on the journey of parenthood and service, Henry Joiner. For her spiritual guidance, Lucille united with Bethel Apostolic Church. In both her formative and spiritual education, Lucille was a faithful student and servant in her personal walk with God. As a devoted wife and nurturing mother of five children, Lucille spent most of her years as a full-time homemaker. She raised her children, serving as an example of light and demonstrating unconditional love. In her work history, she was drawn to serving others, especially children – from transporting handicapped children to school, to working as a nurse’s aide in pediatrics. She also joined the employment force with the Massillon City Schools working as a lunch room and playground monitor for many years. Lucille’s spiritual journey was a very personal one, as she was compelled to follow her own path where freedom of spiritual expression and fervent worship were encouraged. Since 1957, she was an active member of her church until her husband’s illness. At various phases in her discipleship, she sang soprano in their full gospel choir; participated in the Intercessor Prayer Ministry; and served in the Hospitality Ministry. After receiving 5 blessed years of quality, in-home caregiving from her adult children, the Source of Life greeted and welcomed this sweet-spirited woman of virtue into a realm of everlasting peace. Lucille was preceded in death by her devoted husband after 67 years of marriage; her parents; and her brothers, Charles Jones, and Joe Jones, Sr. To carry on her legacy and memory, Lucille leaves her sons, David Joiner, Gregory Joiner and Drake Joiner; her daughters, Patricia (Joiner) Howard and Lynne Joiner; two grandsons, Cory Martin and Craig Martin; and one great grandson, Kyler Martin. Lucille Joiner will always be remembered by a loving family of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended families, and parishioners, to include friends and neighbors within the local communities. Friends and family will gather at Greater Bethel Apostolic Church, Canton on Saturday, February 13, 2021 from 10am-11am with a Home Going Celebration to be held at 11am, Elder Carlos D. Morris, officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Continuing with COVID-19 precautions, all attending will be asked to follow proper social distancing protocol and masks are required. If you are not feeling well, or if you have a compromised immune system, you are encouraged to stay home.
