Luan “Lu” H. Hamit, passed away on Friday January 15, 2021 at the age of 82. Luan was born on October 21, 1938 in Massillon, Ohio to Hassan & Zera Hamit. Luan enjoyed spending time with family and friends, boating and fishing. He was always looking for the next wood carving project for his grandkids, family and friends. He loved working with his hands and shooting skeet and trap. Lu also enjoyed discussing politics and telling stories of his experiences. Lu graduated from Washington High School and joined the United States Air Force. He obtained the rank of Major and became a Navigator and Weapons System Officer. He spent more than six years of his 20 years of service overseas, flying several planes for the USAF: F-101 Voodoo, F-89 Scorpion, F-4 Phantom, and the F-15 Eagle. During this time, he was highly decorated. He received commendation medals for Meritorious Service, Air Medals, and 5 Distinguished Flying Crosses. When he retired from the USAF, he worked for Aid Association for Lutherans (Thrivent) as the District Representative. Upon retirement from Thrivent he and his wife Carol moved to Marblehead, Ohio. He accomplished all of this and more while being a husband to Carol, a father to his four children, a grandfather, and a great grandfather. Luan is survived by his wife Carol Hamit; his sister Betty Wingerter and his brother Bill (Charlotte) Hamit; his children Wayne (Waneta) Hamit of Dallas, TX, Cynthia (Mark) Thiessen of Navarre OH, Steve (Heide) Hamit of Massillon, OH and Jenni (Tim) Vaughn of Holly Ridge, NC; his grandchildren Joshua (Courtney) Hamit, John (Jill) Thiessen, Autumn (Bradford) Patterson, Daniel (Brittney) Thiessen, Mason (Chloe’) Vaughn, Matthew (Maggie) Thiessen, Alex (Gavin) Rundell, Sammi (Nathan) Ballinger and Nathan Hamit; his great grandchildren Conor Thiessen, Zachary Hamit, Carly Thiessen and Hannah Hamit. He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation Saturday January 30, 2021 from 2:00 pm until the Memorial Service at 4:00 pm at Paquelet & Arnold-Lynch Funeral Home, (PPE requirements and social distancing in effect) 1100 Wales Rd NE, Massillon, OH 44646.
