Lt. Col. Stephen J. Hiegl, USAF, Retired, 92, of Massillon passed away at Rose Lane Nursing Center, Massillon, following an extended illness. He was born in Akron, Ohio on August 20, 1919. Stephen was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Massillon. He was a graduate of Washington, High School, Class of 1938. He received his Bachelors of Science in Education from Mount Union College and a Bachelors of Science in Engineering from Akron University. He was a veteran of World War II and Korea serving over 30 years before his retirement from the United States Air Force. Stephen worked 25 years at Griscom-Russell as Director of Quality Control and then taught American Government and History at Perry High School. He enjoyed his family, and traveling throughout Europe. He is survived by: his wife, Betty ( Galey ) Hiegl, whom he married February 25, 1945, a son, Rick and Barbara Hiegl of Massillon, a grandson, Mark Hiegl of Cincinnati, two great-grandchildren; MacKayla Hiegl and Mason Hiegl both of Cincinnati and a nephew, Douglas Miller of Massillon. He was preceded in death by his brother, Edward Miller. Friends may call one hour prior to a funeral service at 11:00AM in the Paquelet Funeral Home, Massillon on Tuesday, March 20, 2012, Rev. Rhonda Gallagher, Officiating. Military graveside services will be held at Sunset Hills Memory Gardens, Canton. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, Massillon.
