Loris Ohannes Chobanian, 90, of Canton, passed away at home on May 14, 2023, following an extended illness.
He was born on April 17, 1933 to the late Ohannes and Hripsime (Paboujian) Chobanian of Mosul, Iraq.
He came to America in 1960 to escape persecution and became a citizen in 1969. Loris was a gifted guitarist and composer and attended LSU receiving his BA and MA, and then received his PhD from Michigan State University. Loris taught at Baldwin Wallace University for forty years retiring in 2010 and composed over 300 scores, many of which have been performed by numerous professional and student musical groups. Loris enjoyed swimming, reading, and traveling. He was dedicated to his family and friends.
Loris is survived by his loving wife, Deanna (Story) Chobanian; daughter, Rita (Benjamin) Swisher; grandchildren, Miro Ohannes Swisher, Ani Hripsime Swisher and Sosi Lyudmilla Swisher; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his infant son Shant, brothers Aram and Berj and sister Alice.
A private family service was held. Burial was in Sunset Hills Burial Park.
