Lawrence (Larry) V. Hug, Jr., age 81, passed away on March 29, 2023. He was born in Canton, Ohio on May 27, 1941 to the late Lawrence V. and Hannah L. (Schuck) Hug.
He graduated from Canton Central Catholic High School in the class of 1959. While at CCHS he was a stand out on the golf team. He remained active as a CCHS alumnus, and in 1990 and 1991 he co-chaired CCHS’s Crusader Challenge giving campaign.
Larry attended Walsh University, where he was the number one player on the Men’s Golf Team from 1963 to 1966 and was instrumental in the program’s growth in its early years. He graduated from Walsh in 1966 with a Bachelor of Arts in General Business. In 1983, Larry received the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Walsh University Alumni Association. This award recognizes Walsh Alumni who have had significant achievement in his/ her profession, who have exemplary service to the community, and who have shown consistent philanthropy and leadership, service and commitment to advancing Walsh’s mission. Walsh also honored Larry in 1994, when they inducted him into the “Wall of Fame” for his athletic excellence and contributions to the Men’s Golf program. Larry also served on the Walsh University Advisory Board from 2016 to 2019.
Larry and Clarice married August 8, 1964 and they resided in Massillon. Larry began his accounting career working for the U.S. Treasury Department of the Federal Government. He completed the requirements to obtain his Certified Public Accounting certificate in 1972. In 1979 he realized a life-long goal of opening his own Certified Public Accounting practice in the Belden Village area. Larry served clients throughout the North East Ohio area until his retirement in 2020. He was a member of both the Ohio Society of CPA’s and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
Larry was a long-time parishioner of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Massillon. He spent countless hours volunteering for the parish in various capacities including several fundraising campaigns, most recently serving as a member of the Parish Finance Advisory Council.
Larry served as Treasurer on the Board of Trustees of the Catholic Service League of Western Stark County from 1980 to 1986. He was also a Third Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 55.
Larry loved nothing more than spending time with his family and friends. Whether getting together for the holidays and celebrating long-standing family traditions, or just grilling up a great dinner to share, Larry was happiest when surrounded by his family. His friends will fondly remember his story telling and teasing, and his golf buddies will remember fun days spent on the links, and the end of golf season parties he and Clarice hosted at their home.
Larry was an avid golfer and a dedicated volunteer. He had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to joke around. He was a long-suffering fan of all of the Cleveland sports franchises, and a proud supporter of Massillon Tiger Football. Most importantly, Larry was a wonderful husband, father, popa, brother, uncle and friend.
He is survived by his loving wife, Clarice, daughters Julianne Hunter (Doug) and Kristin Hug (Jeff), grandsons Patrick and Michael Hunter, brothers Michael Hug (Margaret) and John Hug (Sue), sister-in-law Rose (Broglio) Loretto, many beloved nieces and nephews, extended family, and numerous friends, all of whom have wonderful memories of Larry that bring them great joy. He was preceded in death by his in-laws, Julius and Sylvia (Porrini) Broglio, brother-in-law Art Loretto, and his brother-in-law and sister-in-law Paul and Joan Broglio.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by The Very Rev. Canon Father Matthew Mankowski on Friday, April 14, 2023 at 10:30 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 206 Cherry Road N.E. Massillon. Family and friends may call at St. Mary’s one hour prior to the start of the Mass.
