Karl N Garrod, 95, of Canton, passed away on Thursday, February 3, 2022, at the Canton Regency. He was born in Salem, Ohio on September 19, 1926, to the late Mary Lucinda (Baker) and Herbert H. Garrod. He married Mary Lou Capuano on November 16, 1960, and they celebrated 55 years of marriage before her passing in 2016. Karl graduated from New Waterford High School in 1944 lettering in basketball, football, and track. He attended Ohio State University. As a young man he proudly served in the US Army during World War II. He served in the infantry as a medic and earned the rank of staff Sargent. He was stationed in Yamagata, Japan. He was a Cadre Instructor at a language school and supervised hospital doctors’ offices. Upon Karl’s arrival back in the United States, he married and moved to Orrville, OH. He founded Garrod Manufacturing which was an early conveyorized factory specializing in living room furniture. However, for most of his life, he worked in the asphalt paving and sealing industry. He rose to the position of Marketing Vice President at City Asphalt and Paving. He had numerous hobbies and interests. To name a few, he was a licensed single engine airplane pilot, an avid reader, photographer, traveler, product designer, water and snow skier, tennis player, fresh and saltwater fisherman, golfer, and sailboat racer at Burnt Store Marina and Atwood Lake. He and his wife spent their winters in Punta Gorda, Florida. He was a Mason, Shriner, Jester, Scottish Rite Mason with the Valley of Akron, and he attended the Hall of Fame Luncheons. He will be deeply missed by his blended family, Linda (Larry) Bardwell, Sherry (Stan) Mehringer, Alan (Alice) Plastow, and Shirley (Denny) Horst. 12 grandchildren: Yvette (Tom), Aaron (Jen), April (Joe), Melisa (Sean), Matt (Sancy), Holly (Heather), Thomas (Ashley), Colleen (Anthony), Alexis (Diane), Nicole, Kerri (Andy), Paul (Steph). 20 great-grandchildren: Richard, Denise, Ben, Tristen, Dylan, Audrey, Katelynn, Elizabeth, Cassy (Lance), Preston, Breanna, Logan, Bree, Katie, Gabbi, Emma, Ben, Hunter, Addie, Paisley. Along with his wife and parents, he is proceeded in death by his brother and sister-in-law, Donald E. and Eloise Garrod. In accordance with Karl’s wishes, cremation has taken place. The family invites you to join them in celebrating his life at the Church of the Lakes United Methodist Church, 5944 Fulton Drive NW in Canton, on Wednesday, February 16, 2022, at 11 o’clock. They will receive friends one hour before the service at the church. A Masonic service will be held at 10:15. Prior to the church service, military honors will be rendered by the U.S. Army for Karl’s honorable and faithful service to his country. The family would like to thank the staff at the Canton Regency and Crossroads Hospice for their exceptional care given to Karl and his family during his final days.
