Joseph Romeo Jr.

October 19, 1923 — September 5, 2024

Joseph Romeo, Jr., of Massillon, OH, passed away on September 5, 2024 at the age of 100, with family at his bedside. He was pre-deceased by his beloved wife of 67 years, Thelma Webb Romeo, six brothers, and four sisters.

Born in Wheeling, West Virginia, and raised in Shinnston, West Virginia, Joe graduated as valedictorian of his high school class. After serving in the Army Air Force during World War II, he pursued higher education at West Virginia University in Morgantown, earning a BA in Journalism and Education. He earned his Master’s Degree in Educational Administration from the University of Dayton.

Joe dedicated 33 years of his life to shaping young minds as an American History teacher in the Lake Local School District in Uniontown, OH. He was not only a distinguished educator but also a founding member of the Lake Local Education Association and the chairperson of the Social Studies Department. He’s most recently enjoyed living at the Danbury in Massillon where he made new friends with his wonderful caregivers and his fellow residents.

While Joe took pride in his professional achievements, he cherished his roles within the family even more. He was a devoted husband, a loving father to Vicki Noll (Jack), Sharon Mays (Greg), and Stephanie Romeo; an adoring grandfather to Heather Oxford (Wade), Shannon Sano (Joe), Patrick Shaw, Eric Shaw, Brandon Denham, Michael Denham, and Amber Denham; and a beloved great-grandfather, affectionately known as “Po,” to Ashton Sano, Cameron Sano, Jadyn Sano, Finley Oxford, Kiri Shaw, Adelyn Shaw, Lyla Shaw, Carter Shaw, Harper Shaw, and Paxton Denham.

Joe’s vibrant spirit was evident in his love for dancing, singing, reading, and bringing joy to others. His family will forever remember the light he brought into their lives through his humor, love, and wisdom. He leaves behind a legacy of optimism, gratitude, and compassion that will endure through the lives he touched and the memories they cherish.

His presence will be deeply missed, but his profound impact on his family and community will never be forgotten.

Visitation will be held from 2pm to 4pm on Sunday, September 8, 2024 at Paquelet Funeral Home with a funeral service beginning at 4pm.
