Joseph Paul Matie , age 63, of Massillon, passed away unexpectedly in his home on Tuesday, March 27th,2018. Born on August 22, 1954 in Massillon, Ohio, Joseph was the son of his surviving parents, Therese and Alexander Matie. Joe was a long time resident of Massillon and dubbed “Tiger Joe” for his love of the Massillon Tigers. He served as a Veteran of the United States Army for eleven years as a Medical Specialist also serving on DMZ in South Korea. He spent many years living in Seoul, Korea where he taught English to the native youth. Joe was best known for his Broadcasting and his Announcing career in radio and sporting events. Joseph graduated from Denison University in Granville, Ohio. The oldest of seven, he is survived by his loving family and six siblings; sister, Marie Frenz of Brentwood, Tennessee, sister, Marilyn Speight of Canton, Ohio, brother, Mark Matie and spouse, Jennifer of Celina, Texas, brother, Anthony Matie of Columbus, Ohio, sister, Michelle Matie of Dallas, Texas and sister Deborah Butterfield and spouse Scott of Massillon, Ohio. He was a loving uncle to eight nephews and seven nieces an great-uncle to three nephews. Joseph Matie shared his love of writing and speaking throughout his life. He loved to support his hometown, Massillon and was an announcer at football and basketball games for the Massillon Tigers. He wrote numerous articles and was involved politically. Joe was “larger than life” and brought humor and intelligence in his every viewpoint. He leaves behind numerous loving relatives and friends. Joe was dedicated to serving others all his life. He was best known for his smile and big heart and demonstrated kindness to every life he touched. He had a deep love for his mother, Therese and his father, Alexander and always stood by their side. He will be forever deeply missed. A Celebration of Joseph’s life will be held on Saturday, March 31, 2018 at 11:30 a.m. at the Paquelet Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. before the service. A graveside service will be held on Friday, July 6, 2018 at 10 a.m. at Brookfield Cemetery.
