John Thomas Daugherty

John Thomas “Tom” Daugherty, age 77 of Massillon, passed away on Monday, November 16, 2009 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Ward, WV on April 13, 1932 and was the son of the late Tom and Ethel (Mooney) Daugherty. Tom served his country with honor during the Korean Conflict in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Massillon Baptist Temple where he served as a deacon for 30 years as well as a Sunday school teacher for 33 years. He was known as the “Candy Man” and will be sorely missed by the children and teachers alike. Tom retired from the Timken Company on April 30, 1994 where he worked for 44 years in department 74. During his free time, Tom enjoyed working the concession at Massillon Christian School for 25 years and walking in the Walk-A-Thon. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Linda Staggs, six brothers and five sisters. He is survived by his wife, Martha (Martin) Daugherty whom he married on June 11, 1960, his three children, Janet (Don) Teubert, John Daugherty and Steve (Rachel) Daugherty, son- in- law Gary Staggs, grandchildren, Aleah (Kent) Neuenschwander, Seth (Danielle) Lehman, Lee, Logan and Grace Teubert and Elle Daugherty and his great grandchildren, Payton Lehman and Grant Neuenschwander. In addition he will be dearly missed by sisters Ida May Haught, June Lamielle and Nell Carey along with his brothers, Jimmie Lee Shrewsbury and Charles Franklin (Kay) Daugherty and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, November 20th at 11:00 A.M. at the Massillon Baptist Temple at 1219 Overlook SW, Massillon, OH with Rev. Cecil Thayer officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Hills Burial Park. The family will receive friends at the Arnold-Lynch Funeral Home, 1100 Wales Road NE on Thursday from 5-8 P.M. and at the church one hour before the services on Friday. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made in his name to the Massillon Baptist Temple or the Massillon Christian School, 1219 Overlook SW, Massillon, OH 44647 or Aultman Hospice, 2821 Woodlawn NW, Canton, OH 44708.
