John Jay “Jack” Buttermore, age 85 of Massillon, died Tuesday, May 24, 2005 at his home. He was born on August 4, 1919 in Massillon and was the son of the late Russell & Mary (Archibald) Buttermore. He was a lifelong area resident. He retired from Hill Rubber Company (Chicago, IL) where he was a sales representative. Up until recently, Jack worked as a starter at Tam O’ Shanter Golf Course. A veteran of the U.S. Marines, serving during World War II, Jack was a Captain in the 1st Marine Division. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus # 554. He was inducted to the Washington High School Athletic Hall of Fame, the Ohio Wesleyan Hall of Fame and the Stark County Fast Pitch Hall of Fame. Along with his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his wife, Johanna Buttermore in 1997 and brothers, Chuck & Dick Buttermore. He is survived by his daughter and son in law, Mary Judith & Scott Sanders of Jackson Twp., his sons and daughters in law, Jack & Elaine Buttermore II and Steve & Bette Buttermore all of Dayton, Ohio, Brian & Amy Buttermore of Doylestown, OH, David Buttermore of Massillon, 13 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and his faithful companion, his dog Chester. A memorial Mass will take place on Saturday, June 4, 2005 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Fr. Edward Gretchko officiating. Burial of his cremated remains with military honors will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery following the Mass.
