John F. Miller, age 86 of Massillon, died on Monday, July 20, 2009 at his home. He was born on July 25, 1922 in Massillon and was the son of the late Andrew and Myrtle (Barth) Miller. John was a graduate of Washington High School and then attended Heidelberg College before entering the U.S. Navy for 4 years during WWII. He saw extensive action in the North Atlantic, Mediterranean, Caribbean and South Pacific theatres. In 1972 he retired from the Massillon Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol following 27 years of service. He was the Assistant District Three Commander and retired as a Staff Lieutenant. John was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, the Perry Lodge F. & A.M. in Salem and the Scottish Rite, Valley of Canton. He was also a life member of the Massillon Elks Lodge #441, the D.A.V. #38, the V.F.W. 3124 and the American Legion Post 221. He was an avid sports fan and loved football, especially his Massillon Tigers. Following his retirement, John and Roma enjoyed many years of travel. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Carolyn Youngman. He is survived by his wife, Roma with whom he shared 62 years of marriage, his daughters, Sally (David) Barron of Navarre and Linda (Peter) Knowles of Toccoa, Falls, GA, four grandchildren, Nykole, Johanna, John and Cameron, four great grandchildren, Zach, Colton, Blake, Andrew and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday at 1:00 P.M. at the Arnold-Lynch Funeral Home with Rev. Chip Belanga officiating. Burial will follow in Newman Cemetery.
