John E. Glutting, 76, of Massillon, passed away unexpectedly at his home, on the evening of December 5, 2023. He was born in Massillon on June 23, 1947, to the late Vincent and Mary (Burger) Glutting. A lifelong resident of the area, John graduated in 1966 from Washington High School. He would later graduate from the police academy and serve his community as an auxiliary police officer for the Massillon Police Department for many years. He also owned and operated Glutting Ambulance in 1975.
John also proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. After two faithful years, he was honorably discharged as a decorated veteran, receiving numerous medals including a Purple Heart.
John’s strong work ethic continued, working for the Ohio Department of Liquor for 18 years before being offered a full-time position at Arnold-Lynch Funeral Home where he would once again serve his community for over 25 years. After retiring from the funeral home, John worked as a crossing guard for Massillon City Schools.
In addition, John was a former member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and a longtime member of First Baptist Church. He was also a former member of the Masons, the Shriners, the Wounded Warriors and volunteered as a Jackson Sideliner.
Not only was John a respected member of the community, but he was also a devoted family man. John shared 45 years with his loving wife, Julia “Julie” (DeHass) Glutting and together they raised two sons, Jeremy, and David.
One of John’s favorite things to do with his sons was to raise them loving Pittsburgh sports just as he did. He loved taking them to the former Three Rivers Stadium to watch the Pirates and to cheer on his beloved Pittsburgh Steelers.
Later in life, John would be blessed with the title of “Papa” to granddaughters, Zoey, and Sidney, who were the light of his life. He truly enjoyed all aspects of the beautiful life and family he built with Julie.
He will be deeply missed by his wife, Julie Glutting; sons Jeremy (Kristel) Glutting and David Glutting; and his two granddaughters Zoey and Sidney Glutting.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by an infant brother, David Glutting.
Friends will be received on Sunday, December 10th from 2-4 p.m. at the Paquelet and Arnold-Lynch Funeral Homes. In honor of John, the family asks that those attending wear Steelers apparel or black and gold attire.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 11th at 11am at Paquelet and Arnold Lynch Funeral Home where John’s longtime friend and pastor, Dr. Roger Alber will be officiating. Calling hours will begin at 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
A private burial will be held for the immediate family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church, 20 Sixth St SE, Massillon, OH 44646.
