Joan was born in Canton, Ohio, but grew up in Louisville Ohio. She graduated from Louisville High School and Timken Nursing School, both with honors. Joan enjoyed a 40+ year career as a surgical nurse at Mercy Medical Center where she combined her biology smarts with her passion for helping people. That same passion spread internationally for many years with annual mission trips to the Dominican Republic where she coordinated teams of doctors to perform surgeries on young children. At the end of her career, she left not only patients but friends in many places in Ohio and internationally.
Early in her nursing career, Joan met Terry at their favorite local dance spot. From that time, they danced together through life’s highs and lows, always committed to each other in the deepest love. Joan was a devoted Mom to her children Julie and Brian and grandmother to their families. While balancing her time as a mom, grandmother and nurse through the years, Joan was always ready to join parenting group activities or host gatherings, show her artistic side by making costumes and crafts with her kids, and spending time in nature by growing roses, golfing, swimming and taking morning walks at the beach.
Later in life, Joan would switch from being the care-giver to becoming the person needing care. She valiantly battled Parkinson’s Disease for a little over 20 years. With the help of her husband Terry, Joan worked hard and pushed herself physically and mentally to maintain a rich quality of life. Joan rarely missed family gatherings, sporting events, concerts, and trips with friends.
Anyone that Joan interacted with felt her smile, her kindness, and her “nurse” focus and concern about their health and care. Like her husband Terry, Joan embodied unconditional love and acceptance, an outflow of the God she loved and followed deeply in whose presence she now dances again —with the love of her life, Terry.
The family will receive friends at the Paquelet Funeral Home on Saturday, March 18, 2023 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a Celebration of Joan's life beginning at 1 p.m. Inurnment will follow at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens.
