Jesse J. Prowell, Jr., passed away on Saturday, April 16, 2011 at Aultman Hospital following a brief illness. He was born on April 20, 1927 in Massillon to the late Jesse Prowell, Sr. and Meadier (Estelle) Prowell. Jesse attended Massillon Public Schools, graduated and entered the United States Navy (2 years) leaving with an Honorable Discharge. He was employed at the Republic Steel in Massillon for 36 years; retired and became very active in the community (Civil Service Commissioner Civil Rights; Equal Opportunities for Residents living in the community. He was a member of the Elks Lodge and Masons, NAACP, Urban League. Jesse was also an active member of St. James AME Zion Church and served as a trustee and on other various organizations of the church. He loved doing things in the community and he loved to bowl. In addition to his parents preceding him in death are his wife, Georgia (Stewart) Prowell; son, Jesse III; 2 daughters, Cathy and Selena; brothers, Eugene, Braxton; sisters, Media and Margaret. He is survived by a sister, Lexie Giles of Cincinnati; a daughter, Sylvia Johnson of Massillon; 9 grandchildren, Eddie, Lamont, Jesse IV, Corey, LaMar, Felicia, Kim, Tishara and Robin; son-in-law, Jackie; 12 great grandchildren; special niece, Janet and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. A Celebration of Jesse’s Life and Homegoing will be Saturday at 11 A.M., calling hours will be from 10 to 11 AM at St. James AME Zion Church on 2nd Street in Massillon with Rev.
