James H. Spear

James H. Spear, 82, of Jackson Township, passed away on June 4, 2022, at Aultman Hospital, following a brief illness surrounded by family and friends. He was born on July 9, 1939, to Kenneth and Mildred (Furbee) Spear in Canton, OH. Jim proudly served as a Firefighter for the city of Canton for 33 years. He was a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Luncheon Club, Timken High School Alumni Association, Police and Fire Retirees of Ohio, Clubs of Autumn Golf, Mckinley Eagles #2370. Jim is survived by his loving wife of 51 years Barbara (Ross) Spear, daughter, Kim Marie (Randy) Spear, son, James W. (Deanne) Spear, stepsons, Richard (Carolyn) Portmann, Jeffrey (Terrie) Portmann, Douglas (Sandie) Portmann, grandchildren, Jake (Emily), Jeremy (Jenny), Jason (Kimber), Kristin, Ashley, Justin, Hannah, Hailey, nephew, Timothy Vignos, niece, Cynthia Vignos, 8 great-grandchildren and many close dear friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mildred Spear, father, Kenneth Spear, sister, Jo Ann Vignos, and niece, Teresa Vignos-Fisher. Jim was an avid golfer and a skilled woodworker. He possessed a unique sense of humor and quick wit. Smiling was rare for Jim, but laughter is what he was about. His one-liners will be missed by all that knew him. It is said that God has a plan for each of us. Now a plan is typically based on a want, desire, or need. With that being said we truly believe God needed his tools organized and found the perfect man for the job on June 4, 2022. Calling hours will be held on Friday, June 24, 2022, from 4 - 6 p.m. at Paquelet Funeral Home. The last alarm will be held by the Canton Fire Department at 6:00pm. Funeral service will follow, with Rev. Gary Smith officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Wounded Warriors Project.
