James E. Slaggy

January 20, 1918 — February 5, 2007

James E. Slaggy age 89 of Canton passed away Monday at the Canton Regency. He was born January 20, 1918 in Campbell, OH to the late James & Helen (Simon) Slaggy and lived most of his life in Massillon-Canton area. He enlisted Feb. 6, 1940 in the Army and was stationed at Pearl Harbor during the Japanese attack. Jim received an Honorable Discharge from the Army July 13, 1945. In May he married his wife Dorothy June Halter with whom he shared 43 years of marriage until her death in 1990. Mr. Slaggy retired from Republic Steel Corporation in 1977. He was a member of Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, and the American Legion Post #44 in Canton. In addition to his parents and wife, a son Dennis Slaggy (2004), a sister Helen Rose and two brothers, Joe and Red all predeceased him. He is survived by: Daughter Meredith Phillips of Canton, Son & Daughter in Law James & Judy Slaggy of Sherrills Ford, NC. In addition there is a brother Carl and a sister Ann. Grandchildren: David Phillips and his wife Chris, Susan (Slaggy) Herbster and her husband Steven, Clint Slaggy and his wife Michele, and Steven Slaggy. There are six great grandchildren. Friends may call 5-7 M Thursday at the Paquelet Funeral Home in Massillon. Committal of his cremated remains will be announced later. Just a note of ‘thank you’ to the Dining Room Staff at the Canton Regency in the Independent Living section. He enjoyed your kindness and friendship.
