Helen A. Martin, age 76 of Massillon, died Wednesday afternoon at Doctors Hospital. She was born on February 4, 1929 in East Chicago, Indiana and was the daughter of the late Charles & Mary (Soneriu) Mailat. The family moved to Canton in 1945 and Helen moved to Massillon and married William Martin on August 13, 1950. She worked at Central States Can where she was a hearing test administrator, a packer operator and a tool room attendant. She volunteered at Massillon Community Hospital and the Massillon Library. She helped start the first Brownie/Girl Scout Troop at St. Joseph and was a cub scout den mother. She was very instrumental in Sing Out Massillon. She was a 1948 graduate of Lehman High School and was a member of their alumni association. She also belonged to the CSC Retirees Association. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Altar Rosary Society. Along with her husband, Bill, she is survived by her daughter and son in law, Patricia & Dennis Crookston of Jackson Twp., her son William G. Bill Martin of Massillon, her sister Rose (John) Maier of Massillon, her brother Charles Mailat of Canton, 5 grandchildren and several great grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 10:00 AM at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Fr. Raymond Paul officiating. Interment will follow at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens.
