Helen M. (Cindia) Swartz, age 93 of Massillon, passed away on Friday, February 21, 2014 in Anacortes. WA, where she was living with her daughter, Donna Davis. She was born on November 1, 1920 in Massillon and was the daughter of the late Nick and Elena (Muntean) Cindia. Helen was a 1938 graduate of Washington High School. She entered college at the age of 35 and earned her B.S. Ed. at Kent State University in 1963 and her M. Ed. at Kent State University in 1966. She was a teacher, counselor and social worker for Massillon City Schools for 30 years. She was an advisor to W.H.S. Distinguished Citizens Committee and W.H.S. Scholarship Committee for 10 years. She served on Massillon's Civil Service Commission during the terms of Mayors Mark Ross, Delbert Demmer and the first term of Francis Cicchenelli, Jr. She was very active in her community, volunteering for the Family Service Society; she served on the boards of the Y.W.C.A., Stark County Mental Health, Spring Hill Historical Home and the American Lung Association. She also served as Commissioner of the Little League Girls Softball. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Massillon, serving on and chairing many committees at the church. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Warren Swartz in 2002, and her brothers, Amile, Howard, Nick and John Cindia. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Gary Davis of Anacortes, WA and her brother and sister-in-law, Mike and Nedra Cindia of Alliance, OH. Funeral services will take place on Saturday at 2:00 P.M. at First United Methodist Church with Pastor Julia Wertz officiating. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends at the Paquelet Funeral Home on Friday from 6-8 P.M. and on Saturday one hour before the service at the church.
